Everyone’s your friend in New York City
The kids and I are off to New York in a few hours. I’m looking forward to:
- Italian ices;
- Fireflies;
- A summer thunderstorm;
- Warm ocean water; and of course
- My mom, dad, and sister
…none of which are to be had here in Northern California. My kids are looking forward to Dino-Walk and Dylan’s Candy Bar.

I never saw any in New York while growing up, but I grew up in Queens, which is part of the city proper, and I thought we might get lucky at my dad’s house which is farther out on Long Island, since I knew that there are fireflies not too far away, in Pennsylvania.
